Stand Out Studio photographer Carl Hewlett was out and about in the city of Gloucester on Saturday covering news stories for the Gloucester Citizen and Gloucestershire Live. The first job of the day was the Mock Mayor of Barton parade.
The ‘election’ of a mock mayor comes from the time of King Charles II’s return to the throne after the civil war and the siege of Gloucester in the 1660s. The monarch punished Gloucester for supporting Parliament in the war by ordering it to tear down its walls and made the civic boundaries much smaller, meaning the large area of Barton no longer had a mayor. In response the people of Barton elected a Mock Mayor to poke fun at Gloucester and this event continued for hundreds of years before disappearing and then being revived recently.
Also on the diary for the day was the Podsmead Big Local Fun Day, the Gloucester Day 2017 Parade, Sing for Water Gloucester and Tuffley Rovers FC v Swindon Supermarine FC. Pictures from the day below...
